Vehicle Description 1982 Chevrolet El Camino SS Royal Knight Towards the end of the malaise period, early 80's cars were not known for their horsepower output and were mostly still struggling to stretch beyond 200 from a V8. The fifth and final generation of El Caminos landed smack in the middle being produced 1978 to 1987 with a facelift taking place in 1982. 22,732 El Camino's were produced in 1982 with 3,207 of them being Z15 Super Sport models with some visual enhancements.  For consignment, a 1982 Chevrolet El Camino SS Royal Knight with a title verified 107,835 actual miles. The Royal Knight cosmetic package was offered from 1979-1983 and while numbers are elusive, it is believed that only a few thousand were produced each year. This one presents an opportunity for restoration. Exterior Dark Redwood Metallic covers our half car half truck El Camino and overall, the paint is in need of some love. The panels are straight but the clear coat is peeling from horizontal surfaces, there's rough coverage on others, the usual chips, crazing, and some overall dullness of a car that's seen some sun. The front end styling is borrowed from the ubiquitous Malibu of the day and the rear tail lights, embedded on the chrome bumper below the tailgate, it's a unique feature that allows instant recognition. The medieval Royal Knight lettering is still intact and the bed remains clean. Other imperfections include faded bumper inserts, rust holes on the hood and blistering, rock chips and spray, rust through and filler on the fenders and wheel openings, blistering throughout, and rust on the under side of hood. Interior Prominent GM styling at the time bleeds onto the door panels with vinyl, carpet and plastic coverage, all maintaining that redwood motif and the plastic panel with armrests has faded to more of a chalky pink. There's some fading on the plush cloth bench seat as well where the red velour shows slightly weathered and has wear on the entry point but otherwise intact. Our steering wheel has some patina and retains a center panel of faux burlwood which also serves as the faceplate along the dash, faded in areas but clean in others. The instrument cluster contains round gauges and a big clock along with a column of indicator lights to the right. The dash pad is badly cracked and the plastic around the central A/C panel and AM/FM radio is faded. Plush red carpet survives below but the headliner is gone, giving way to the layer of dry foam.  Drivetrain This car is equipped with a 305ci V8 rated at 145 horsepower and fueled via a 4-barrel carburetor. It's mated to a TH250 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the 10 bolt rear axle with 2.41 gears. Power brakes and power steering are on board.  Undercarriage Driver quality conditions prevail here with surface rust, plenty of patina, and a body mount under the bed that is rusted. There's also rust on a body brace and some oil on and around the pan. While up on the lift, we note some filler and rust on the bottom of the doors. Brakes are on board as front power disc and rear drum, a single exhaust travels through a stock style muffler, and suspension consists of coil springs front and rear with a 4 link in back. Drive-Ability Despite the rough looks, the car actually starts, runs, and drives well. We're on tires that are 36 years old so we keep the test short and find that functional items on the car all work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. This bit of royalty is ready for a refresh and in the meantime, would make a great parts hauler or cool farm truck. There are enough bones here to make a great father/son/daughter project where together, you bring this relatively rare model back to its former glory! 1GCCW80H1CR159786 1-USA G-General Motors C-Chevrolet C-4001-5000 GVWR W-El Ca |
